Sjoukje van der Meulen received her doctorate from Columbia University (2009) and taught at Columbia College, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Oregon. She is currently assistant professor of modern and contemporary art at Utrecht University, in the Netherlands, and was Rudolf Arnheim Visiting Professor at Humboldt University in Berlin. She was also an  editor of Metropolis M and co-editor-in-chief of Stedelijk Studies, the online academic journal of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Her current research interests include contemporary art in the European Union (1992-now).
